Diagnostic ultrasound
The rehabilitation physician at RehaGym has a Samsung Medison HS30 diagnostic ultrasound right in the consulting room. Tendons, muscles, ligaments and joints can be seen immediately during the examination – no waiting for results from another facility, no radiation and no pain. The examination takes around 10 minutes and leads directly to a physiotherapy plan.
How the examination works
The rehabilitation physician applies gel to the skin and moves the probe over the area being examined – shoulder, knee, ankle, elbow, Achilles tendon or muscle belly. On the screen they see the structure of the tissues and may ask you to move, so they can also assess how a tendon or muscle behaves under load. You know the result immediately and discuss it with the physician on the spot.
Ultrasound complements the clinical examination rather than replacing it: it typically follows the initial examination by a rehabilitation physician and helps decide whether physiotherapy is enough, or whether further examination (X-ray, MRI) or a specialist's intervention is needed. No preparation is required.
What we examine with ultrasound
Inflammation and overload of the Achilles tendon, patellar tendon and rotator cuff, tennis and golfer's elbow; partial tears and their extent.
Muscle fibre tears after sport, haematomas, scarring from older injuries and its effect on function.
Injuries to the collateral ligaments of the knee and ankle, joint effusions, bursitis, Baker's cyst.
A repeat examination shows how the tissue is healing and allows the intensity of physiotherapy and training to be adjusted without unnecessary risk.
